Q: Is AD-ID required?

Many networks and groups prefer and support the use of A-ID. Some networks have a stated requirement in their commercial guidelines.

If you are using SAG-AFTRA talent, under the April 2013 agreement, all commercials produced for television, radio and digital platforms featuring SAG-AFTRA union members must use AD-ID as the sole standard commercial identifier.

AD-ID recommends that you contact publishers to confirm their preferences and/or requirements.

Q: What is the difference between AD-ID and ISCI?

ISCI (Industry Standard Coding Identification) was created to identify broadcast TV ads in 1970.

AD-ID replaced ISCI in 2003.

ISCI was a mostly manual coding standard that required companies to develop workaround practices as the advertising supply chain became more complex and the industry moved to more automated workflows.

The 4A’s and ANA officially announced the withdrawal of ISCI in 2007. There is no longer a way to register an ISCI prefix or, therefore, create ISCI codes. Companies that are not using AD-ID are simply creating their own proprietary codes and are not using the industry standard.

Q:  Can I use AD-ID internationally?

AD-ID is the standard identifier for advertisements in the United States, however, AD-ID codes can be used internationally if a company wants to use AD-ID to manage their assets globally. There may be other standards or requirements in other countries so we recommend that you confirm for each country to make sure you don’t need to use an alternate identifier.

The AD-ID system also has a field for an alternate identifier if you want to create an AD-ID code and associate it to another identifier that may be required in other countries.
